Dr Steven Trotter
I'm Steven. I'm a principal software engineer/architect who spends far too much time playing with really nerdy things like what I'll be giving a talk on. I started in IT over 20 years ago now and have seen a lot of different things. I've worked in finance, insurance, gambling, ecommerce, even video games. I've been in software and platform and worked with more technologies than I can realistically remember now both inside and outside of work. I like cats more than people, though I still like people (mostly), just not as much as my cats.

TUI or not TUI, that is the question
Session Type: Talk
Terminal UIs (TUIs) rule. Did you know you can play doom in a Terminal? This talk will show some of the mad and cool things people have done with TUIs and how to write a very basic TUI.
Somewhere in history we decided GUIs were going to be all the rage. Then they were too hard, so we started building web UIs instead and now you need a browser, a build step and 400MB of node_modules to render a list. Here's the thing though, it doesn't have to be like this, Terminal UIs (TUIs) are amazing. This talk is a fun tour of some genuinely mad things people have built in the terminal, a look at what makes the really good ones good, and a demo of how you'd write your own (it's much more straightforward than you think).
