Everything We Stopped Owning (And the One Thing We Never Did)
Session Type: Talk
Serverless was never about servers — it's about ownership. Mechanical ownership keeps shrinking; strategic ownership keeps growing. AI is next in line. The real differentiator now is investing in the mental models that tell you what to build.
Serverless was never really about servers. It's about ownership. And it turns out that's the same story engineering has told for thirty years — we just keep moving which layer of the stack we're talking about.
From pets (you own the machine) to cattle and DevOps (you own the fleet) to containers (you own the orchestration) to serverless (you own the business logic, and nothing below it) — grounded in real examples at each step. Mechanical ownership decreases; strategic ownership increases. What disappears is the machinery. What's left is judgement.
Then the pattern moves to its next stage: AI is doing to code authorship what serverless did to infrastructure. We're abstracting away who writes the code — but we've always owned the outcome, and we still do. As mechanical ownership keeps shrinking, the differentiator for the next decade won't be how well you write code. It'll be how well you've invested in the mental models that tell you what to build.
