Breaking down the hidden barriers. Backend engineers rarely talk about accessibility — we assume it's another domain’s problem, as a result users get excluded. This talk explores real backend scenarios where accessibility matters, and how to build more inclusive products.
Backend engineers rarely talk about accessibility — often from a lack of awareness or a misplaced assumption that it is someone else’s problem.
However, the systems we build can create hidden barriers for our users. Timeouts, error handling and API design all have accessibility consequences, often for users with disabilities we don’t see.
In this talk, I'll walk through the core principles of accessibility (no prior knowledge required) and apply them to real backend scenarios: from designing APIs that support assistive tech, to clear and understandable error responses.
You'll leave with new ways of thinking about how the apps and websites we build impact users. Plus, a checklist of principles to verify your code is built inclusively.
